چکیده

In this paper, we propose to compare three diffusion models to track the portion of the corticospinal tract dedicated to the hand motor function (called hand motor fibers hereafter), using diffusion, functional and anatomical MRI. The clinical diffusion data have few gradient directions and low b-values. In this context, we show that a newly introduced model, called diffusion directions imaging (DDI) outperforms both the DTI and the ODF models. This new model allows to capture several diffusion directions within a voxel, with only a low number of parameters. Two important results are that i) the DDI model is the only one allowing consistent tracking from the mesencephalon to the most lateral part of the cortical motor hand area, and that ii) the DDI model is the only model able to show that the number of hand motor fibers in the left hemisphere is larger than in the contralateral hemisphere for righthanded subjects; the DDI model, as the other two models, fails to find such a difference for left-handed subjects. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such results are reported, at least on clinical data.

Assessing Region of Interest Schemes for the Corticospinal Tract in Patients With Brain Tumors

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) techniques are widely used for identifying the corticospinal tract (CST) white matter pathways as part of presurgical planning. However, mass effects in patients with brain tumors tend to cause anatomical distortions and compensatory functional reorganization of the cortex, which may lead to inaccurate mapping of white matte...

Corticobulbar tract changes as predictors of dysarthria in childhood brain injury.

OBJECTIVES To identify corticobulbar tract changes that may predict chronic dysarthria in young people who have sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in childhood using diffusion MRI tractography. METHODS We collected diffusion-weighted MRI data from 49 participants. We compared 17 young people (mean age 17 years, 10 months; on average 8 years postinjury) with chronic dysarthria who sustai...

Corticospinal tract integrity and motor function following neonatal stroke: a case study

BACKGROUND New MRI techniques enable visualisation of corticospinal tracts and cortical motor activity. The objective of this case study was to describe the magnetic resonance evidence of corticospinal pathway reorganisation following neonatal stroke. CASE PRESENTATION An 11 year old boy with a neonatal right middle cerebral artery territory ischaemic stroke was studied. Functional MRI was un...

Corticospinal Tract Compression by Hematoma in a Patient with Intracerebral Hemorrhage: A Diffusion Tensor Tractography and Functional MRI Study

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate corticospinal tract compression that was due to a hematoma by using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) and functional MRI (fMRI) in a patient with an intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). A 23-year-old right-handed woman presented with severe paralysis of her right extremities at the onset of a spontaneous ICH. Over the first three days from onset, the mo...

Corticospinal MRI tractography in space-occupying brain lesions by diffusion tensor and kurtosis imaging methods

Department of Neurosurgery, Hospital Garcia de Orta, Almada, Portugal Recently, DKI-based tractography has been developed, showing improved crossing-fiber resolution in comparison to deterministic DTI-based tractography in healthy subjects. In this work, DTI and DKI-based tractography methods were compared regarding the assessment of the corticospinal tract in patients presenting space-occupyin...
